Army Project

BTI’s Army Project exposes Israel’s future leaders to a liberal, inclusive, spiritual service that combines modern elements with the traditional prayer book.

BTI’s project with the Israel Defense Forces exposes Israel’s future leaders to a liberal, inclusive, spiritual service that combines modern elements with the traditional prayer book. By exposing them to the profound impact of our spiritual service, BTI helps these young adults understand and explore their Israeli-Jewish identities.

The project includes three elements: musical Kabbalat Shabbat services for officer candidates during their training courses, discussions of Jewish renewal and a free copy of the BTI siddur for every participant.

Up to 400 officers participate in the BTI project and for many of them, this is their first experience of men and women singing and praying together in a Jewish context. The Shabbat can have a powerful and transformative effect, particularly for those who have only been exposed to Orthodox Jewish practice. In broadening officers’ Jewish experiences, BTI hopes to shift public opinion and acceptance for liberal, pluralistic Judaism.
